US Agrees to Send Advanced Rocket System to Ukraine, Kyiv Promises Not to Attack Russian Territory

TRIBUN-VIDEO.COM - US President Joe Biden has confirmed that he will send a more advanced rocket system to Ukraine.

This rocket system can strike with precision Russian troops up to a range of about 80 kilometers or 50 miles.

Meanwhile, Ukraine promised the US not to use these weapons to attack Russian territory.

The advanced rocket system is part of a $700 million weapons package that is expected to be launched this Wednesday (1/6/2022).

In a New York Times guest essay published on Tuesday, Biden said Russia's invasion of Ukraine would end through diplomacy.

But the United States must provide significant weapons and ammunition to give Ukraine the ultimate leverage at the negotiating table.

“That’s why I’ve decided that we will provide the Ukrainians with more advanced rocket systems and munitions that will enable them to more precisely strike key targets on the battlefield in Ukraine,” Biden wrote.

The US agreed to supply the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), after Ukraine gave 'guarantees' it would not use missiles to strike inside Russia.

The package also includes ammunition, anti-fire radar, air surveillance radars, additional Javelin anti-tank missiles, as well as anti-armor weapons, officials said.

Ukrainian officials have asked allies to provide a long-range missile system that can fire a barrage of rockets hundreds of miles away, in the hope of turning things around in a three-month war.

A US official said Ukraine had promised the US not to attack Russian territory with Biden's new weapons.

They said they would only use the new US rocket system on Russian targets in Ukraine.

"Ukraine has given us assurances that they will not use this target on Russian territory. Based on that assurance, we are very comfortable with that," the official said.

The official also emphasized that Russia was the first to attack Ukraine.(tribun-video.com)
