Skenario The Martian ditulis oleh Drew Goddard berdasarkan novel dengan judul yang sama karya Andy Weir.

Film The Martian dirilis pada 25 November 2015 dalam format 3D dan dibintangi oleh Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Sebastian Stan, Michael Peña, Kate Mara, Kristen Wiig, Sean Bean, dan Jeff Daniels.

The Martian merupakan film genre sci-fi karya Ridley Scott yang keempat setelah Alien (1979), Blade Runner (1982) dan Prometheus (2012).

Sinopsis

Astronot yang juga ahli botani NASA Mark Watney (Matt Damon) dibiarkan telantar di Mars ketika kru misi Ares 3 terpaksa mengevakuasi lokasi pendaratannya di Acidalia Planiria pada sol 18.

Hal ini dilakukan karena ekspedisi tersebut terkena badai debu yang kuat dan angin yang sangat kencang.

Selama evakuasi, Watney sempat tertusuk dan menghilang.

Juga karena visibilitasnya nol, para kru ekspedisi pun menganggap Watney sudah mati.

Namun ternyata Watney hanya terluka dan masih hidup.

Dengan tidak ada cara untuk menghubungi kru di Bumi, Watney harus mengandalkan keterampilan ilmiah dan teknisnya untuk bertahan hidup.

Ia pun menanam kentang di dalam ruangan bernama Hab yang dibangun di habitat Mars dan membakar hidrazin untuk membuat air.

Watney pun mendokumentasikan pengalamannya.

Di Bumi, NASA menemukan bahwa Watney masih hidup ketika gambar satelit dari lokasi pendaratan menunjukkan bukti aktivitasnya.

Mereka merenungkan untuk menyelamatkannya, namun menahan berita tentang keselamatan Watney dari kru Ares 3 lainnya.

Diketahui kru Ares 3 sedang dalam perjalanan kembali ke Bumi menaiki pesawat ruang angkasa Hermes, dan NASA tidak ingin menganggunya.

Di Mars pun, Watney terus berusaha mencari cara untuk dirinya bisa kembali ke Bumi dengan mengandalkan kemampuan ilmiahnya.

Hingga satu peristiwa terjadi, Hab tempat Watney menanam kentang sobek dan lubangnya melebar, sehingga menghancurkan Hab lalu tak lama baju pelindungnya pun rusak.

Namun, tanamannya mati dan mengancamny alagi dengan kelaparan.
