Mahershala Ali memiliki nama lengkap Mahershalalhashbaz Gilmore yang sering dipanggil Ali.

Ketika Mahershala Ali berumur tiga tahu, ayahnya meninggalkannya dan keluarganya untuk mengejar kariernya di bidang tari.

Hingga akhirnya Mahershala Ali dibesarkan di lingkungan dekata Hayward oleh ibunya, Wilica Gillmore.

Namun ibunya menikah lagi saat Mahershala Ali berumur sekitar Sembilan atau sepuluh tahun, dan ayah tirinyalah yang berkontribusi menjadikannya seperti sekarang ini.

Mahershala Ali dibesarkan dengan pengaruh agama Kristen yang kuat dari ibunya, serta saudaranya yang lain, tetapi Mahershala Ali masuk dalam Islam ketika di NYU.

Nama Mahershala merupakan nama pemberian ibunya yang berasal dari Alkitab ketika ibunya bermimpi tentang itu.

Setelah memeluk agama Islam Mahershala ali mengubar nama belakangnya dari Gilmore menjadi Ali.

Keluarga

Mahershala Ali menikah dengan Amatus Sami-Karim seorang aktris sekaligus seniman pada 2013.

Mahershala Ali dan Amatus Sami-Karim bertemu ketika di NYU, keduanya berpacaran pada masa sekolah seni mereka.

Amatus Sami-Karim merupakan lulusan dari Tisch dan juga menjalani pendidikan akting selama satu tahun di Royan Academy of Dramatic Art.

Pada 2017 pasangan Mahershala Ali dan Amatus Sami-Karim dikaruniai seorang bayi perempuan yang dinamai Bari Najma Ali.

Nama Bari sendiri berarti pencipta dan Najma berarti bintang.

Pendidikan

Sebelum menjalani karier aktingnya, Mahershala Ali menempuh studi dengan sebuah beasiswa bola basker di St. Marry’s Collage of California pada tahun 90-an.

Artis yang memiliki tinggai 188 cm tersebut lulus pada 1996 dengan gelar Sarjana Komunikasi Massa.

Tidak lama setelah kelulusannya Mahershala Ali magang di California Shakespearce Festival.

Kemudian dia mendaftar untuk program akting di Universitas New York dan memperoleh gelar masternya pada 2000.

Karier

Sebelum berakting, Mahershala Ali pernah bekerja dengan The Gavin Report, sabuah industri rekaman, namun dirinya memutuskan untuk berakting.

Sehingga pada 1997 Mahershala Ali berhasil mengikuti audisi untuk program akting lulusan NYU.

Mahershala Ali memulai karir aktingnya dengan peran yang kecil.

Ketika 2001 dirinya mendapatkan peran sebagai Dr. Trey dalam serial TV Crossing Jordan.

Diikuti perannya dalam film Making Revolution pada 2003 dan drama The Great White Hope.

Dari 2004 hingga 2007 Mahershala Ali tampil sebagai Richard Tyler di serial TV sci-fi The 440.

Mantan pemain bola basket itu memperoleh terobosan layar peran dalam film fantasi 2008 The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, dimana dirinya berperan sebagai Tizzy bersama Brad Pitt.

Terobosan tersebut diikuti penampilannya dalam Crossing Over (2009), Predators (2010), dan The Place Beyond the Pines (2012).

Mahershala Ali juga bergabung bersama Jennifer Lawrence dalam The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, dan mengulang perannya pada sekuel selanjutnya.

Bersama Jennifer Lawrence, Mahershala Ali berperan sebagai Boggs, kepala keamanan distrik 13, dimana dia membimbing dan melindungi Katniss yang diperankan Jennifer Lawrence dalam menghadapi pemberontakan distrik terhadap Capitol.

Mahershala Ali turut meramaikan serial Netflix dan Luke Cage milik Marvel Entertaiment.

House of Cards, dimana dirinya mendapatkan nominasi Emmy di musim panas itu.

Awal 2017 Mahershala Ali muncul sebagai pean pendukung yang menonjol dalam kesuksesan box-office Hidden Angka.

Hidden Angka bercerita tentang seorang matematikawan perempuan Afrika-Amerika pada tahun-tahun pebentukan NASA.

Mahershala Ali kembali lagi ke layar pada 2019 di Season 3 dari True Detective HBO.

Projek selanjutnya Mahershala Ali yaitu dalam film remake milik Marvel Studios, Blade sebagai pemeran utama.

Film Blade masuk dalam jajaran dilm Marvel pada Fase keempat.

Mahershala Ali akan bermain sebagai manusia setengah vampir, yang akan muncul pertama kali di layar lebar sejak film Wisley Snipes Blade: Trinity pada 2004.

Sebelumnya Mahershala Ali juga pernah membintangi film milik Marvel yaitu Cottonmouth sebagai Cornell.
