TRIBUN-VIDEO.COM - North Korea launched eight short-range ballistic missiles (SRBM) towards the East Sea on Sunday (5/6/2022).

The launch was North Korea's 18th missile test round in 2022 alone under President Kim Jong Un's control.

The launch came a day after South Korea and the United States completed the first joint military drills involving a US aircraft carrier in four years.

Kim Jong Un is trying to build the country as a global military power with nuclear capabilities.

South Korea's military confirmed, Kim Jong Un fired off the missiles over 35 minutes from at least four different locations.

Including from western and eastern coastal areas and two inland areas north of and near the capital, Pyongyang.

It said the missiles flew 110 to 670 kilometers (68 to 416 miles) at maximum altitudes of 25 to 80 kilometers (15 to 56 miles) while reaching speeds of Mach 3 to 6.

This propelled it to a record number of launches in a year under Kim Jong Un's control.

Shortly after North Korea's three ballistic missile launches, including an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), on May 25, South Korea and the US carried out a joint missile launch in their first joint move since 2017.

The US had pushed the United Nations Security Council to place further sanctions on the North amid escalating tensions over the continued missile testing last month.

But Russia and China vetoed that move.

Kim Jong Un has sought to make a global statement about the North’s capability, pushing to develop weapons that could even reach the US mainland.

Nuclear disarmament discussions between the US and the North hit a wall over sanctions against the North in 2019.

Experts believe Kim’s strategy with the increasing weapons displays that he will be able to negotiate from a position of strength.
