Unsatisfied with NATO's Support, Zelensky Said West Lacks 'Unity' Over Ukraine War

TRIBUN-VIDEO.COM - Ukraine’s president has accused the West of being divided over the extent of its support for his country.

He said that unity is a about of weapons.

But in practice Western countries are still not united in fully supporting Ukraine against Russia.

This was said by Zelensky during a panel discussion on Ukraine at the World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting in Davos .

Zelensky, speaking via video link, also pointed to a lack of consensus over the possible accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO.

Turkey, an NATO member, has expressed opposition to the Nordic countries being members of the military alliance.

He considered that this did not show the unity of Western countries.

“The unity is about weapons. My question is, is there this unity in practice? I can’t see it. Our huge advantage over Russia would be when we are truly united,” Zelensky said on Wednesday (25/5/2022).

Washington and European countries have poured billions of dollars' worth of arms into Ukraine to help the country's outgunned forces beat back the better-armed Russian invaders.

Kyiv has called for greater support, membership to the US-led NATO military alliance, and for a no-fly zone to be imposed over the country.

Zelensky said Ukraine was grateful for support from US President Joe Biden but said resolve was lagging closer to home.

He specifically cites neighboring Hungary as Ukraine's other top demand.

Hungary has voiced opposition to the EU embargo on Russian oil.

"We are on the European continent and we need the support of a united Europe. Hungary is not as united as rest of EU, " he added.

He also pointed to a lack of consensus over Sweden and Finland's historic bid to join NATO, which has been called into question by Turkey.

Zelensky also questioned concrete steps toward Western unity.

"Is there this unity regarding the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO? No, no. So, is there a strong joint West? No," the Ukrainian leader said.(tribun-video.com)
